Sunday, January 8, 1837 – Sacrament Meeting and Confirmation

⊕1 January 8, 1837 partook| of the Sacrament of the| Lords Supper. I was confirmed| in the Church by the laying| on of the hands of Elder| Cahoonn2 when I received| such a measure of the spirit| as to be sensible of the subject| of a song of Zion, sung by| Elder Sherman3 viz. : the on| Coming of Christ.

1 Symbol in manuscript seems to be a circle (○) intersected by an extended plus (+) sign/cross. This symbol appears multiple times throughout Richard’s journal, although its precise meaning is unknown.
2 Reynolds Cahoon (1790–1861) was an early leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a close associate of Joseph Smith. He served in various leadership roles, including as a member of the Kirtland High Council.
3 Lyman Royal Sherman (1804–1839) joined the Church in January 1832 and was a participant in Zion’s Camp. He was appointed as a president of First Quorum of the Seventy on February 28, 1835 and was issued an elder's certificate on March 30, 1836 in Kirtland. He was ordained as a high priest and appointed to the Kirtland high council on October 2, 1837. He was later appointed to serve as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve but died before he was notified of or ordained to the calling.

Partook of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. I was confirmed in the Church by the laying on of the hands of Elder [Reynolds] Cahoon, when I received such a measure of the Spirit as to be sensible of the subject of a song of Zion, sung by Elder [Lyman Royal] Sherman, viz.: the oncoming of Christ.
